How the Holy Quran was written and compiled? Part -4
Bismillahir Rahman nir Raheem
Assalam oalaikum,
The Holy Qur'an continued to be read according to the seven ahruf till
half way through Caliph Uthman's (ra) rule. After this there was some
confusion in the outlying provinces regarding the Qur'an's recitation.
Some Arab tribes started bragging about the superiority of their
ahruf. This started a rivalry between the different tribes. Besides
this s some new Muslims also began to mix up the various forms of
recitation out of ignorance.
"We [Allah] have, without doubt, sent down the Message [The Noble
Quran]; and We will assuredly Guard it (from corruption). (The Noble
Quran, 15:9)"
Hazrat Uthman (ra) noticed that the copies of the Holy Quran were
written in different dialects. In some cases they were changed to
sound precisely like the other dialects. He ordered to burn them
because they did not use the proper Arabic language that was revealed
upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (saw). In some copies of the Quran
the words were completely different because of the difference between
the dialects that were rampant in those days, in Arabia. Hazrat
Uthman (ra) compiled all of the Surahs (Chapters) of the Holy Quran
that had been written during the time of Prophet Muhammad (saw) in the
city of Madina and formed the present day true copy of the Holy Quran.
So Hazrat Uthman (ra) acted in a timely and wise way and performed the
Herculean task of compiling the Quran into one single book. All the
copies of the Quran, besides the original Quraishi harf of the Quran,
were burnt in order to preserve the Quran.
Since the various Arabic dialects had problems with each others, so
standardizing the Holy Quran with its original Quraishi dialect was
the need of the hour.
Hazrat Uthman (ra) decided to produce official copies of the Holy
Qur'an (according to the dialect of the Quraysh) and dispatch them
along with the Qur'anic reciters to the chief Islamic centres. His
decision was backed up by Sahaabah and consequently all unofficial
copies of the Qur'an were destroyed.
Thus the Holy Qur'an, which is available through out the world today,
is written and recited only according to the harf of the Quraysh
tribe.
