How the Holy Quran was written and compiled? Part -1
Bismillahir Rahman nir Raheem
Assalam oalaikum,
Initially the entire Holy Quran was written by the Sahaba (ra) under
the guidance of Prophet Mohammad (saw). Since paper was not commonly
available in those days, in Arabia, the Sahaba (ra) used to write down
on smooth surfaces of stones/rocks, scrolls of leather, large tree
leaves, the bark of date tree, slates of bamboo etc.
In this way the Quran had been written down on various parchments,
scrolls etc but separately. It was yet to acquire the form of a book.
The compilation of the Holy Quran in the form of a book was done on
two occasions, after the death of Prophet Mohammad (saw).
The first compilation was done by Hazrat Abu Bakr Sideeque (ra), who
was the first Caliph of Islam. It so happened that after the death of
Prophet Mohammad (saw) Muslims began to leave the fold of Islam in
large numbers. Many began to follow false prophets. This created a
chaotic situation. In order to control this situation Hazrat Abu Baqr
Sideeque (ra) had to dispatch a large army of Sahaba (ra).
In the Battle of Yamamah a large number of Sahaba lost their lives in
their quest to destroy the traitors. At this critical juncture, Hazrat
Umar (ra) felt the need to compile the Holy Quran in the form of a
book. He thought that with the death of so many huffaz (those who had
learnt Quran by heart) portions of the Quran will be lost. Hazrat Abu
Baqr Sideeque too realized the gravity of the situation. Therefore, he
chose Hazrat Zaid bin Thabit (ra) who was a Qari as well as
Hafiz-e-Quran and assigned to him the daunting and uphill task of
compiling the Quran. Hazrat Zaid bin Thabit (ra) was chosen for the
compilation work due to a special reason. Hazrat Gibreel (ra) used to
visit our beloved Prophet and recite before him the amount of Quran
that had been revealed till that time. In the last year of Prophet
Mohammad (saw) Hazrat Gibreel (ra) had recited the entire Quran twice
before him. Hazrat Zaid bin Thabit (ra) had the privilege to listen to
Hazrat Gibreel (ra)’s second and last recital as he was with Prophet
Mohammad (saw) at that time. So he had the honor to hear to every word
of Hazrat Gibreel (ra)’s recitation. This was the special reason why
he was assigned such a tough task.
Initially, the Sahaba found this task too difficult to handle because
this type of work had not been done during the life of Prophet
Mohammad (saw). However, ultimately they realized the need of the
compilation and Hazrat Zaid bin Thabit (ra)negan to collect the
Quranic Surahs from the memories of the Sahaaba and also from the
parchments, scrolls, leather, stone etc on which the Quran was
initially written.
Thus came into existence the first bound copy of the Holy Quran in
which the Surahs were written in order of their revelation. The main
purpose of the first compilation was only to provide people with
reference, so that it would become easier for people to refer to it
and check up on any verse/aayat of the Quran. This copy of the Holy
Quran remained with Hazrat Abu Bakr (ra) until he was alive. After his
death Hazrat Umar (ra) took possession of it. Before his death he
handed over this copy to his daughter Hazrat Hafsa (ra) and it
remained with her till the second compilation.
