Status of women in Islam-2
Assalam oalaikum,
The following ahadith clearly show that in the role of a wife also, womenfolk are accorded a high status in Islam.
The last sermon of Prophet Mohammad (pbuh), which is also known as Khutbatul Wada, has been mentioned in almost all the books of Hadith. In his final khutba Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) says, ‘It is true that you have certain rights in regard to your women, but they also have rights over you. Remember that you have taken them as your wives, only under Allah's trust and with His permission. If they abide by your right then to them belongs the right to be fed and clothed in kindness. Do treat you women well and be kind to them, for they are your partners and committed helpers.
Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) also said, "It is the generous (in character) that are good to women, and it is the wicked who insults them."
Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said, "The most perfect believers are the best in conduct and best of you are those who are best to their wives."
Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said, ‘They (wife) are your garments and you are their garments’ (Surah Bakarah, verse 187).
There are some misconceptions regarding conduct towards one’s wife and some people misconstrue the Quranic verses and believe that Islam encourages beating one’s wife. Some amount of faulty translation can change the meaning of the entire message. This can lead to a serious distortion of the Qur’anic teachings. The truth is quite contrary because Qur’an has discouraged this widespread malpractice that was rampant in both Islamic as well as the non-Islamic society.
The following Quranic verses prove that Islam does not encourage wife-beating:
In a hadith Prophet Mohammad (Pbuh) said; How does anyone of you beat his wife as he beats the stallion camel and then he may embrace (sleep with) her?
Prophet Mohammad (Pbuh) said: "Do not beat the female servants of Allah".
Some (women) visited my family complaining about their husbands (beating them). These (husbands) are not the best of you;" and"[It is not a shame that] one of you beats his wife like [an unscrupulous person] beats a slave and maybe he sleeps with her at the end of the day."
Quran says, “And among His Signs is this, that He created for you mates from among yourselves, that ye may dwell in tranquility with them, and He has put love and mercy between your (hearts): verily in that are Signs for those who reflect. [30:21].
Hence we find that Islam encourages peaceful and harmonious relationship between the husband and wife and certainly not the barbaric practice of wife beating.
