Assalam oalaikum
Allah (swt) is the creator of this entire universe and of all the living creatures in it. Who else can know the creation better other than the Creator himself?
In the recent years, research done in Botany shows that plants also have male and female gender. Even the unisexual plants possess distinct male and female characteristics. In some species, fruits, which are the end products of reproduction, can be formed from non-fertilized plants. Such parthenocarpic fruits such as bananas and specific types of figs, pineapples etc also possess definite sexual characteristics.
Now let’s have a look at some relevant verses from the Holy Quran:
Glory to Allah who created in pairs all things that the earth produces, as well as their own (human) kind and (other) things of which they have no knowledge (TMQ-36:36)
..and of everything we have created pairs’ (TMQ-51:49)
‘And has sent down water from the sky. We have produced diverse pairs of plants each separate from the other (TMQ-20:53)
These verses emphasize the existence of everything in pairs, be it human beings, animals, plants or other things which man has not yet been able to explore.
Critics of Islam have tried their level best to show that these verses do not hold much value. They take pains in trying to prove that they are right by presenting elaborate statistical data regarding the plant sex. For the sake of argument let’s accept what they are saying is right. Now how on earth would they explain the fact that the Quran has mentioned about plant sex, 1400 years ago? Did those critics or their ancestors living 1400 years back had any inkling about the concept of plant sex? Definitely not! It is the Almighty Allah (swt), the All-Knowing creator who has disclosed this fact to us in His Word, i.e. Al-Quran.
