Assalam oalaikum,
Each Surah of AL-Quran has been divided into various sections, which are called Rukus. A Ruku comprises of a number of aayats/verses, all pertaining to a single topic.
There are altogether 540 Rukus in Al-Quran.
The Rukus of Al-Quran did not exist during the lifetime of Prophet
Muhammad (saw). Neither were they found during the time of the Sahaaba (radhiyallahu anhum).
It was around the 4th century (Hijri calendar) that the Ulema of Bukhara, Russia divided the complete Quran into 540 Rukus, for the purpose of Taraaweeh.
The Ulema felt that if one Ruku is recited in every raka'at of the Taraaweeh salaah then the Hafiz will be able to complete the Quran precisely on the 27th night of Ramadaan
When the Ulema worked out these Rukus for the sake of Taraaweeh, they assured that the Rukus comprised of the verses/aayats having similar topics and theme. The Ulema named it Ruku since the Hafiz performs ruku after reciting it in one raka'at of Taraaweeh namaz.
In a nutshell, the Rukus that we find in the Quran today had been simply created for the convenience of the hafiz during Taraaweeh.
