Islam’s important role in eradicating social evils -1
Assalam oalaikum,
Even after the advent of Christianity, the Egyptians who became Christians continued to follow their ancient and pagan customs. Every year in the month of July, a virgin who was dressed up as a bride, used to be thrown into the river Nile. The logic behind this awful custom was to appease a (non-existent) Goddess Nile.
Egypt had come under Muslim rule, during the time of Hazrat Umar (ra) and Amar bin-Al-Aas was appointed as the governor. When the elders of Egypt sought permission to continue with their beastly practice, the Governor refused outright. He argued that Islam believes only in one Allah and this old practice was against the principles of Islam.
The elders of Egypt were disillusioned by this and they warned the governor that if a virgin was not sacrificed the river Nile would not rise in flood as a result of which the entire countryside would get dry.
The governor Amr, however, did not yield to their requests which made the elders of Egypt quite sad.
When the months of July and August passed by and the Nile did not rise in floods the Egyptians blamed Islam for this misfortune.
