Al-Tibb-al-Nabawi (The Prophetic medicine) – 9
Bismillahir Rahman nir Raheem
Assalamoalaikum,
Tibb-al-Nabawi is a divine medicine that was gifted to Prophet
Muhammad (saw) by Allah (swt) by revelation. Therefore human beings
cannot contradict or modify the Prophetic medicine by their so-called
experience or knowledge. For the true believers it is enough that
Allah (swt) has guided His Prophet (s.a.w.) in the field of health.
It is narrated in the Sahihain, that Abdullah bin Jafar Radi Allaho
Anh said, "I saw Prophet Muhammad (saw) eating ripe dates with
cucumbers".
Ripe dates are hot in the second degree and they add strength to the
cold stomach. However, they rot quickly, make one thirsty, damage the
teeth; ruin the blood and bring about pain in the prostate. On the
other hand cucumbers are cold and wet in the second degree. They
quench thirst and have a cooling effect on the stomach. If the seeds
of cucumber are dried, crushed and then boiled with water, this drink
can quench thirst, help in urine production and they will also soothe
the pain in urinary bladder. When cucumber seeds are crushed and then
sifted, they will whiten the teeth when brushed with it.
In a nutshell, dates are hot whereas cucumbers are cool. They make an
ideal combination as they can neutralize each others harmful effects.
This is an example of creating a balance between the harm of one food
by mixing it with its opposite or antidote.
Combining the foodstuff or medications with their antidotes or
opposites makes it milder and prevents its harmful side effects.
Hazrat Aishah Radi Allaho Anha said, "They tried to make me fatter
using every type of food, but I did not get fatter. But when they fed
me ripe dates and cucumbers, I became fatter".
Neutralizing the harmful effect of any hot substance with a cold one,
the dry with a wet one; produces milder substances that are considered
to be the best remedies and preventive measures.
