Assalam olaikum,
Emperor Aurangzeb was kind enough not to collect jizya from womenfolk, handicap people or old people.
In return, the government used to take the responsibility of protecting the life and wealth of its non- Muslim subjects. By chance, the government failed to do so, especially during wartime, the jizya was returned.
Those Muslim subjects who possessed some wealth which was beyond a certain amount (nisab) were taxed. Zakat i.e. 2.5% of wealth and ushr, which is 10% of the agricultural produce were collected from such Muslims along with sadaqah, fitra and khums. The Hindu subjects were not supposed to pay all this. Consequently, the amount of tax collected from the Muslims was far greater than the amount collected from Hindus.
Aurangzeb should also be given due credit for abolishing more than 65 kinds of taxes. Consequently, the state treasury incurred an annual loss of revenue worth 50 million rupees. I
In light of these facts, it is high time the western countries retract the lies written about Aurangzeb and admit their mistake of falsely accusing him of intolerance of non-Muslims. (contd)
