Status of women in Islam-3
Assalam oalaikum,
Besides a mother and a wife, a woman also plays the role of a daughter.
Before the advent of Islam the social evil of burying the girl child alive by the parents was rampant. However, Islam strictly forbids female infanticide. Here are the Quranic verses that show that Islam condemns this evil practice:
The Quran says in at-Takwir: 8-15: "When the female infant, buried alive, is questioned - for what crime was she killed; when the scrolls are laid open; when the World on High is unveiled; when the Blazing Fire is kindled to fierce heat; and when the Garden is brought near - Then shall each soul know what it has put forward. So verily I call.
The Quran also says in Surah Al-Anam-6:151-153, "Come let me tell you what your Lord has really prohibited for you: You shall not set up idols besides Him. You shall honor your parents. You shall not kill your children from fear of poverty - we provide for you and for them. You shall not commit gross sins, obvious or hidden. You shall not kill - Allah has made life sacred - except in the course of justice. These are His commandments to you that you may understand."
The following hadith shows the importance of a girl child, Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) said: 'If anyone cares for three daughters, disciplines them, marries them and does good to them, he will go to Paradise.' Sunan of Abu-Dawood Hadith 5128
These Quranic references and hadith prove that daughters are a great source of blessing from Allah (swt) because Allah (swt) has promised a place in paradise to those who nurture them. Becoming sad on the birth of daughters was the practice of the Non-Believers (Kuffar) because the Kuffar used to consider them a burden. Our dear Prophet’s (pbuh) family was continued through his daughter. Had the daughters been inferior then Allah (swt) would have chosen a son to carry forward the lineage of his most beloved Prophet (pbuh).
Therefore we see that Islam has accorded a very high status to daughters and considering them to be inferior or a burden would be going against the tenets of Islam.
