Assalam oalaikum,
Allah (swt) says in Surah Al-Araf verse 26-27: “O children of Adam, We have bestowed upon you clothing to conceal your private parts and as adornment. But the clothing of righteousness - that is best. That is from the signs of Allah that perhaps they will remember. Children of Adam! Let not Satan deceive you in the manner he deceived your parents out of Paradise, pulling off from them their clothing to reveal to them their shame. He and his host surely see you from whence you do not see them. We have made satans the guardians of those who do not believe.
These verses of the Holy Quran make it evident that there is a dual purpose of clothing for mankind. Firstly, it is meant to cover the private parts so that people do not feel ashamed and secondly it is meant to adorn ourselves so that we may look well-dressed, pleasant and decent to look at.
Qatada said, "I heard Abu 'Uthman an-Nahdi say, 'While we were with 'Utba ibn Farqad in Azerbaijan, 'Umar's letter reached us stating that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, had forbidden silk except for this much,' and he indicated with his index and middle fingers," He said, "As far we know, he meant a border." (Sahih Bukhari-Book of dress)
Sa'id ibn Abi Sa'id al-Maqburi related from Abu Hurayra that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "That part of the waist wrapper which is lower than the ankles is in the Fire."
The above mentioned ahadith show that wearing silk is prohibited for men in Islam. The reason may be when it comes in contact with the body it makes a man effeminate. This goes against his masculinity. There are chances that a man wearing silken clothes may develop the characteristics of femininity even if he was the most chivalrous man.
In the second hadith is a warning for those who trail their garments in arrogance.
So we find that the basic purpose of clothing was to hide our private parts and adornment. Unfortunately we find that these twin purposes have been defied in the present era where people do not think twice before flaunting their expensive clothes publicly and wearing revealing clothes. The nudists, claiming to be “naturalists”, have shunned clothes altogether. They claim to live their lives naturally, without clothes, without shame, and simply as God has created it. There misdemeanor resembles that of the pagan Arabs who used to do tawaaf naked, before the advent of Islam. However, this period was known as Jahiliya or the period of ignorance. We are fortunate to have the Holy Quran and the Sunnah of the Prophet Mohammad (saw) for guidance. Hence it is suitable for us to mould our conduct according to the Shariah.
