Isti'zaan or seeking permission before entering the Home (part 1)
Assalam oalaikum,
Allah (SWT) has taught us the Islamic etiquette of Isti’zaan (seeking permission) in the Holy book of Quran. Allah (swt) has ordered us not to enter houses other than our own until we have asked for permission before entering and have given the greeting of Salam after asking. One is expected to seek permission thrice. If he/she gets the permission then entering is permissible otherwise the person should go away.
In the following verses of Surah Noor Allah (swt) says:
24:27 O you who believe! Enter not houses other than your own, until you have asked permission and greeted those in them; that is better for you, in order that you may remember.
24:28 And if you find no one therein, still enter not until permission has been given.
And if you are asked to go back, go back, for it is purer for you. And Allah is All-Knower of what you do.
24:29 There is no sin on you that you enter houses uninhabited, you have any interest in them. And Allah has knowledge of what you reveal and what you conceal.
The etiquette of asking for permission before entering a house has many benefits. First of all it gets rid of the possibility of obscenity and immorality. If a person enters someone’s house without asking for permission then it is possible that he may see the women of the house. This can lead to evil/immoral situations. Secondly, one may be engaged in some sort of personal activities which need privacy. If visitors enter all of a sudden, one will be deprived of privacy.
Therefore it is compulsory for every true believer of Islam to practice Isti’zaan. This rule is applicable even when a man visits a man or a woman visits a woman and they are mahram. So even though a man may be visiting his own mother, sister, or any other mahram woman, he is expected to first seek permission before entering her house or room to avoid embarrassing situations.
