Shaykh Muhammad Rifat (1882-I950) is considered to be one of the best Quranic
reciter of present times. He is appreciated for his melodiousness, spirituality and
uprightness and his mastery and understanding of the art of recitation in all of
its
aspects. Shaykh Rifat was the first Quranic reciter to broadcast his recitation
in 1934. His voice, style and his noble character have been a role model for the
Egyptians and others. Composer and music critic Suleiman Gamil had specified
the characteristics of Shaykh Rifat’s style such as the changeability of the melodic
line and the tone of his voice. Others have pointed out his expertise in connecting
melody to meaning (taswir al-mana).
