The different names and attributes of Al-Quran (part-1)
Assalam oalaikum,
Al-Quran is the most widely used name of the last Divine book which was revealed by Allah (swt) on Prophet Muhammad (saw). Allah (swt) has used the name Al-Quran more than sixty times in Qur’an.
Majority of the Islamic scholars believe that the word Al-Qur’an originates from Qara, Yaqra’u, which implies, ‘to collect’. Whereas some scholars believe that Al-Qur’an is so named as it collects the fruits of all the earlier Heavenly Books while others say that it is a collection of all the knowledge.
Besides the most commonly used name, i.e. Al-Quran, the Holy Quran has 4 other names, namely Al-Furqan, Az-Zikr, Al-Kitab, and Al-Tanzeel (Uloom-Ul-Qur’an).
Now let us try to decipher the reason behind these 4 other names.
Al-Furq’an: The Holy Qur’an is also known as Al-Furqan because it differentiates between the truth and falsehood. Allah (swt) says: “Blessed is He, Who sent down the Criterion to His servant, that it may be an admonition to all creatures.”(25:1)
Az-Zikr: The Holy Quran is also known as Az-Zikr because it has many advices and past incidents which can make a person wiser. Allah (swt) says:
“We have, without doubt, sent down the Message; and We will assuredly guard it (from corruption).” (15:9)
Al-Kitab:
It is named so because it collects past incidents and other information in an excellent way. Allah (swt) says:
“Ta. Sin. Mim. These are verses of the Book that makes (things) clear.”(26:1-2)
At-Tanzeel:
It is called by this name too because it is a revealed book from Allah (swt). The Quran says:
“Verily this is a Revelation from the lord of the worlds.”(26:192)
