In the present age due to the advancement in medical science and technology, the gender of the child can be easily determined with tests like Amniocentesis or Ultrasonography.
So the parents of such unfortunate girls now do not have to wait till they are born so that they may kill them because now the female fetus can be aborted easily. The problem of female infanticide has transformed in to the issue of female foeticide or aborting a female fetus.
Despite the fact that gender determination has been banned by several countries, illegal sex determination tests are carried on stealthily. This leads to a sharp decline in the child sex ratio.
The sex selective abortions have created the following haphazard situation in the society:
Grave socio-economic and demographic problems
Severe disturbance in the marriage system because of the scarcity of men.
Increase in demand for prostitution and trafficking.
