A Surah can be described as a chapter of Al-Quran, which consists of many aayats and Rukus and which has Bismillah written at its beginning.
Most of the Ulema unanimously agree that there are altogether 114 Surahs in Al- Quran, as enlisted before. However, some Sahaaba (ra) presented different numbers for the surah count in Al- Quran.
Some of these differences of opinion are as follows:
According to Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas'ud (ra) there are 112 Surahs in Al-Quran. He opined that the Muowwazha-tain, i.e. Surah Falaq and Surah Naas are definitely The Word of Allah (swt) but not Surahs of Al-Quran. They were revealed mainly as a supplication for safety against sorcery and Jinn.
Imam Mujahid, who was a well-known student of Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbas (radhiyallahu anhu) claimed that there are 113 Surahs in The Quran. He believed that Surah Anfaal and Surah Towba are one Surah.
Some Imams have counted and Surah Inshiraah and Surah Dhuhaa as a single Surah.
However, the most unanimously accepted number of Surahs is 114.
