Assalam oalikum,
Shaykh Mahmud Abd al-Hakam (d. 1982) was born in Karnak in Upper Egypt.
After having established his reputation in the south he had shifted to Cairo in
1933.He was an academically inclined person and he intended to pursue his
studies at al-Azhar. Recitation was his second priority. However, since his voice
was quite exceptional and soul-stirring he was encouraged to become a
professional Quranic reciter instead.
According to Shaykh Mahmud Abd al-Hakam the Radio assisted him in
transforming into a thorough professional because a job in the Radio helped him
on establishing a vast audience. It thereby helped him in building a reputation as
a well-known Quranic reciter.
He worked with the Radio since 1944. Shaykh Abd al-Hakam had been inspired by
Shaykh Rifat and he also gave the latter due credit for having a good influence on
him.Though Shaykh Mahmud Abd al-Hakam had never studied music formally
but he considered music to be beneficial to recitation. Shaykh Abd al-Hakam is
admired for his qualities such as dignity and accurate recitation as well as a
restrained but fluent musicality.
