Isti'zaan or seeking permission before entering the Home (part 2)
Assalam oalaikum,
I have earlier discussed the meaning and the significance of Istizaan. If we look at the life of our dear prophet (saw) we may find instances when he had shown annoyance when the etiquette of Istizaan was not followed.
In the Two Sahihs, it is recorded that the Prophet Mohammad (saw): If a person peeps into your house without your permission and you hurl a stone at him and it puts his eye out, you will not be balmed at all.
This shows that how much the privacy of an individual has been given importance in Islam.
Imam Ahmad recorded from Kaladah bin Al-Hanbal that during the Conquest of Makkah, Safwan bin Umayyah had sent him with milk, small cucumbers and a small gazelle when Prophet Mohammad (saw) was at the top of the valley. He said, "I went to the Prophet (saw) and I did not greet him with Salam. Neither did I seek his permission. The Prophet said, ‘Go back and say: "As-Salamu `Alaykum, may I enter?''
This hadith was also recorded by Abu Dawud, At-Tirmidhi and An-Nasa'i
Muqatil bin Hayyan said:
"During the Jahiliyyah i.e. the period of ignorance before the spread of Islam, when a met his friend, he would not greet him with Salam. Instead he would greet him with a "Huyyita Sabahan'' or "Huyyita Masa'an'', which is equivalent to a Good morning or a Good evening.
This was the greeting prevalent amongst the people during that period. They did not ask for permission before entering each other's home. A man would walk straight into the house and say, "I have come in,'' and so on.
This was tough for a man to bear because he might be with his wife. So Allah (swt) changed all that by his command of covering and chastity, making it pure and free of any sin or indecency.
