Assalam olaikum,
Besides trying to crush Islam in its budding stage the Jews also committed the heinous crime of plotting to kill our Dear Prophet (saw) more than once. They invited him cunningly for a religious debate along with three companions. Fortunately, a Jewish lady, whose brother had entered into the fold of Islam, informed him that the Jews were secretly plotting to kill the Prophet (saw) and they would be bringing weapons along with them at the meeting place. When our Dear Prophet (saw) came to know about the treachery of the Jews, he cancelled his trip.
On another occasion, Prophet Mohammad (saw) had visited a Jewish area in order to settle a dispute between two parties, all alone. The Jews tried to seize the opportunity and they tried to kill Prophet Mohammad (saw) by rolling a rock from the roof over his head. Fortunately, this time also our Dear Prophet had a miraculous escape.
So basically it was in this context that the verse 5:51 and other such war-related Quranic verses were revealed. In order to interpret the Quranic verses correctly and to understand their true essence it is imperative to look into the background in which the verse was revealed. If the critics interpret the each verse in a secluded way then obviously they will end up in a blind valley. (contd)
