Assalam oalaikum,
Allah (swt) says in the Holy Quran, An-Noor, verse 4 and 5:
And those who accuse chaste women, and produce not four witnesses, flog them with eighty stripes, and reject their testimony forever they indeed are the Fasiqun (liars, rebellious, disobedient to Allah).
Except those who repent thereafter and do righteous deeds, (for such) verily, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
These verses show that accusing pious women has been strictly condemned in Islam. In fact, even if a person is an eye witness to a woman’s crime of zina ( fornication) then also one has no right to slander or make known the charge of adultery publicly against them unless and until the person can produce four eye-witnesses who have actually witnessed the scandal.
The reason why Islam has a strict approach towards this matter is because the Shariah Law discourages the spread of evil gossip or slander.
There are many negative effects of slander and gossip which Islam intends to put to an end. When a person washes someone’s dirty linen in public and discloses his private matters, whether true or false, then those who listen to him pass on the information to still others, along with their own additions. This creates filth because the secret which was known only by one man becomes the talk of the town. Slandering a pious woman is tantamount to character assassination which can bring disgrace to her in the society. Moreover, the promiscuous types of men will try to pursue her as they misjudge her character. This creates a vicious circle of evil in the society, by and large.
