Consumerism in the light of Seerat-e-nabawi- 4
Assalam olaikum,
Al- Harith, a doctor, commented on this saying of the Prophet (saw), ‘That which killed mankind is the intake of food on top of undigested food’.
Ibn Masawah, who was a Muslim doctor said after reading the above mentioned hadith, ‘If the people only followed these words, they would avoid all the ailments and maladies and the pharmacies and clinics would be idle.
There are numerous such ahadith which emphasize on the benefits of eating in moderation.
As far as moderation in spending is concerned our Dear Prophet (saw) has guided us in this mater too. He said. ‘Eat, drink, wear clothes and give alms without extravagance and without conceit.’ (Sahih Bukhari)
This hadith teaches us a lesson of living within our means. Instead of envying others for what they possess, we should learn to be grateful to Allah (swt) for everything which he has blessed us with. By doing so we shall also not strive to acquire things which we hardly need.
So living within one’s means and being contented with whatever Allah (swt) has blessed us with, is the only solution to the vicious circle of consumerism in which the world seems to be caught in.
