Assalam olaikum,
5. Tabaeen: The Companions /Sahabah (ra) of Prophet Mohammad (saw) are followed by their Successors, who are known as the Tabi'in. The Tabi'in have learnt the tafseer of Al-Qur'an from the Companions (ra). Hence, if a tabaee quotes a Sahabi, it is also considered as authentic. Their statements also have a great importance in the science of tafseer. There is a conflict amongst the scholars about the decisiveness of the statements of the tabi'in in tafseer (al-ltqan, 2/179). However, their importance cannot be underestimated.
6. Intelligence: Intellect can also be used to interpret the Quran but only if it is used along with the other sources of tafseer which we have discussed so far, such as Al-Quran, Hadith, statements of the Sahabah etc. If intellect is utilized without any of these sources of tafseer then the outcome can be disastrous and blasphemous.
Let us consider an example. The Quran says: “And remember Musa prayed for water for his people; We said “Strike the rock with thy staff”. (2:60). Sir Syed Ahmad, a man who strived for intellectual awakening, used or rather misused his intellect to misinterpret the verse as “Walk on this rock with the help of the stick”, thereby denying the well-known miracle of Hadhrat Musa.
