Consumerism in the light of Seerat-e-nabawi- 2
Assalam olaikum,
With a rise in disposable incomes the demand of beef and chicken has also grown in the present society. With the stupendous rise in this demand, the business has snow-balled into a lucrative farming industry. In 2004, 258 million tons of meat was produced in factory farms to meet the high demand. The growing demand of meat and the consequent rise of these factory farms have created a negative impact on our environment. Consequently, there is a scarcity of water and vegetables in the world for the following reason:
8 ounce portion of beef needs 25,000 liters of water
A slaughterhouse produces 5 million liter of waste water in Hong Kong.
Much more oil is needed by such factory farms to produce meat than is needed in the production of vegetables such as potatoes.
The livestock produces about 600 million tons of waste in a year on such factory farms. A lot of this waste ends up polluting the water, soil and air.
Since the livestock is fed with high protein animal feed, which is produced mainly by soy-beans, this has been detrimental to the growth of traditional crops. Moreover, the factory farmed meat can prove to be a serious health hazard by causing food-borne ailments such as Salmonella, Listeria etc. (contd)
