What are the Aayaat of Al-Quran and their origin?
Assalam oalaikum,
The word aayat (verse) means a sign and the term Aayaat is its plural. Each and every aayat of Al- Quran is meaningful and eloquent which is a sign of Allah's (swt) Supreme power and knowledge.
Moreover, the word aayat has been used in Al-Quran to refer to the miracles performed by the Ambiyaa (alaihis-salaam). Miracles were performed in order to prove the truthfulness of the Ambiyaa. Miracles also serve the purpose of proving that the scriptures revealed to the Ambiyaa (alaihis-salaam) were from Allah (swt).
Allah (swt) had challenged the Arabs to produce a single verse that could compete with any aayat of Al- Quran. Nobody could take up this challenge. This proves that each and every aayat, is a miracle in itself, from Allah (swt).
An aayat can comprise of a single word or else it can consist of several short sentences. An example of the former is: Aayat no.64 of Surah Rahman and the example of the latter is the aayat of Mudayyanat, which is the longest aayat in the Quran. This is verse no.282 of Surah Baqarah (Chapter.3) and it has 16 sentences.
These aayats were shown to Prophet Muhammad (saw) by Hazrat Jibreel (alaihis-salaam) at the same time when the ayaats of Al-Quran were revealed to him. So Prophet Muhammad (saw) got to know where and when a verse of Al-Quran started or ended. Likewise, the sequence or order of the verses was also shown to Prophet Muhammad (saw) by Jibreel (alaihis-salaam). Accordingly, Prophet Muhammad (saw) would notify the scribes of wahi where and when each verse should be written.
