Zakat- The third Pillar of Islam (part-2)
Assalam oalaikum,
The hadith also rebukes those of us who do not pay zakat:
Asma bint Yazid reported that she and her aunt visited the Prophet (saw) wearing gold bracelets. The Prophet (saw) asked them, ‘Did you pay the zakat for them’? She replied in the negative. On hearing this Prophet Mohammad (saw) asked, ‘Do you not fear that Allah will make you wear a bracelet of fire? Pay its zakat.’ (Quran- narrated by Ahmed 6:461) with a good chain, as Haythami stated in Majma al zawa’id (3:67)
Narrated Hazrat Ayesha, ‘The Messenger of Allah came to me and on seeing me wearing silver rings he asked, ‘What is this Ayesha’? I replied, ‘I made them to adorn myself for you O Messenger of Allah’. He asked, ‘Did you pay their zakat’? I replied, ‘No, or what Allah wishes’. He said, ‘Their punishment in hell is enough for you’. (Narrated by Aby Dawud in his Sunan with a strong chain, Daraqutni in his Sunan and Baihaqi in his Sunan-4:140)
Prophet Mohammad (saw) said, ‘If a single person were to sleep hungry in a town, God’s protection is lifted from that town’. (Masnud Imam Ahmed)
Thus, we find that Zakat is an Islamic obligation which has an underlying objective of promoting social justice. It ensures sustenance to the weaker sections of the society. Therefore, the Quran and the Sunnah of the Prophet (saw) have emphasized on ‘spending for good causes’ (sadaqat or infaq) and in the way of Allah (swt) out of one’s resources. (contd)
