Assalam o alaikum,
We have seen in the earlier post that one of the major problems faced due to capitalism is excessive expenditure. Western capitalism confuses consumerism and material prosperity with happiness. However since the resources in the world are not unlimited so there will be peace only if people consume according to their needs. Mahatma Gandhi had once remarked that, ‘There is enough for everyone’s needs but not enough for anyone’s greed”.
Greed can make people hoard wealth thereby making resources scarce. The kind of excessive consumption that capitalism induces not only destroys the natural resources but also destroys the minds by alluring people towards infinite worldly passion.
Over consumption can lead to debt, anxiety, craving for more and more, discontentment and suffering. In a capitalist society the people are always stressful because the rich have to constantly compete to maintain their status whereas the poor have to struggle to achieve more.
The baseless and unnecessary consumption (tempted by advertisements or fashions) or consumption for merely showing off can lead to people into a vicious materialistic circle.
Islamic teachings provide us with a practical solution which can put to an end the problems created by capitalists in an attempt to pursue their own selfish interests. (contd)
