Assalam oalaikum,
The Jahiliya Period, as the name suggests, was full of ignorance. The pagan tribes indulged in all sorts of evils and vices. They possessed a tribal mindset which hindered the growth of individualism. They used to fight battles over petty issues. For the crime committed by a single individual they used to take revenge on the entire clan of the wrongdoer. Drinking alcohol was rampant during the Jahilya Period.
Alcoholism has many harmful effects which can outweigh its few benefits such as enjoyment of temporary bliss etc
Some of the harmful effects of alcohol intake are as follows:
Alcohol affects the functioning of the stomach
Loss of appetite
Speed ups the ageing process.
Causes heart failure
Can lead to sins such as committing adultery and murder
Results in wastage of one’s hard-earned money.
Allah (swt) says in the Holy Quran: “They ask you regarding wine and gambling. Say, in both of them is a major sin and there is some benefit for men, but the sin of them is far greater than the benefit.” (TMQ-2:219)
According to Dr. M. Robertson, “If half the pubs and bottle stores were closed, I guarantee that half of the hospitals and jails will remain closed”.
Islam is the only religion that has abolished alcohol and has thus cleansed the Muslim society of a sin which also proves to be a key to other major sins such as murder, rape, wife beating etc.
