Shaykh Mustafa Ismail [1905-1978] was an Egyptian qari who was born in Mit
Ghazal, a village near Tanta (north of Cairo) He learned the Qur'ân at a tender
age. He studied Tafsir (exegeses), Qirat (the science of recitation) and Fiqh
(Islamic jurisprudence) at the Ahmadi Institution at Tanta. He intended to
pursue higher studies at al-Azhar University in Cairo. However, he was
encouraged to become a Quran reciter instead.
There is an interesting incidence behind his reciting the Quran at the radio
station. The Qari who used to recite the Quran from Egypt radio fell ill suddenly.
Shaykh Mustafa Ismael was assigned the task of reciting. King Faruq who
happened to be one of the
Audience liked Shaykh Mustafa Ismael’s recitation a lot and he requested him to
recite Quran during the Ramadan for him. Since then he became the King’s Qari.
Shaykh Mustafa had been official reciter of Anwar al-Sadat and accompanied him
during his trip to Jerusalem in 1978. Shaykh Mustafa had devoted his entire life
to
the service of Quran due to which he was held in high esteem by everyone.
The famous Egyptian writer Faiz Halava has remarked ‘In Mustafa Ismael’s voice,
the Quran is even deeper than the deepest ocean”.
At the time of his death, Shaykh Mustafa had reached the peak of his fame, as a
reciter at the prestigious al-Azhar mosque.
