Assalam oalikum,
Shaykh Ali Hajjaj As-Suwaisy (1926-2001) was a distinguished Quran reciter. He
rose to fame by following the late Sheikh Muhammad Rifat.
He was taught Qur'an by Shaykh Abu Aziz al-Sahhar, who was a renowned Azhari
scholar and Shaykh Said al-Sahhar’s father.
Shaykh Ali Hajjaj al-Suwaysi had begun reciting in public gathering at an early
age. He had recited for a group of Yemenis at a conference at the tender age of
seven or eight years.
Sheikh Ali had joined the Radio in 1946-47 and he joined the Music Institute to
study Ud and music theory till a period of 4 years. During this time he was
encouraged to recite the Quran. Sheikh Ali won accolades for his use of maqam
saba. His voice was considered to be quite suitable for saba.
Sheikh Ali had visited UK several times. He had attended the London Central
Mosque during Ramadan.
