Assalam oalaikum,
Allah (swt) says in the Holy Quran: “O you who have believed, indeed, intoxicants, gambling, (sacrificing on) stone alters (to others than Allah) and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of satan, so avoid it so that ye may be successful (TMQ-5:90)
As soon as this verse was revealed the believers readily gave up drinking alcohol instantaneously. Wine was thrown away and the empty wine pots and other containers of fermented grapes and palm honey were discarded from each and every household and gatherings. Consequently, the streets of Medinah flowed like streams of wine. The Muslims showed an extraordinary will-power because of their strong Iman.
The Islamic prohibition of alcohol did not take place in one day. Rather it was the result of a well-organized plan which was implemented over a period of 3 years.
After the Quran declared alcohol to be haraam, the believers at once gave up alcohol thereby turning this event into the greatest anti-alcohol movement in the history.
Critics say that the Quran has never categorically stated that alcohol is unlawful or haraam. However, this is a false assumption made by some because Quran has categorically prohibited alcohol and even regarded it as a sin. So why would the Quran prohibit something and call it a sin if it was halaal or lawful?
