Assalam oalaikum,
In Surah Maryam, verses 25-26 Allah (swt) has prescribed dates for Hazrat Maryam, when she was pregnant with Prophet Isa (as). There is great wisdom behind this advice of Allah (swt). This prescription was meant to make Hazrat Maryam’s delivery convenient in the following ways:
Medical studies show that ripe dates contain a substance that produces uterine spasms and boosts contractions, especially in the time of child birth.
Certain stimulants found in dates fortify the muscles of the uterus during the last months of pregnancy. This helps to dilate the uterus at the time of child birth and also reduces post-natal bleeding.
Dates provide energy to the body as they contain many elements of vital importance which help the body remain healthy and energetic. Modern-day scientists have discovered that a person can survive for many years on a diet of mere dates and water.
Dates contain a type of sugar which provides the body with high levels of heat energy. This energy can be easily broken down in the body. As this sugar is fruit sugar fructose, it does not rapidly raise the level of blood sugar as is done by glucose.
The medicinal value of date fruit, especially its benefits for pregnant women, has been discovered only recently. Since Al- Quran is a Divine Book so it has highlighted this fact 1400 years back, when scientific research was non-existent.
