Islam is a religion of peace – 23
Assalam olaikum,
In spite of what history shows us Islam is blamed of being peaceful only for namesake. Muslims are painted as the worst people in the entire world.
In the past, the biased writings of the orientalist have created lot of misunderstandings about Islam. To add fuel to the fire, some Christians, due to their sheer hatred for Islam, have started quoting Quranic verses out of context. The logical way of interpreting a Quranic verse is to understand the historical background of the verse. However, Christians prefer being illogical.
In spite of the treatment meted out to the Muslims, they have been respectful towards the non-Muslims. The non-Muslim minorities have always enjoyed religions freedom, whether in Muslim Spain, Jerusalem, Greece or Egypt.
One of the best examples of Islamic tolerance is the living together of the Christians and Jews in Muslim Spain. For several centuries the Jews were made to suffer and they could not establish themselves. However, the period when they had a cultural renaissance, known as the Golden Age, occurred when they were living under Muslim rule in Spain. So after a long period of persecution in Europe the Jews finally gained acceptance, peace and harmony under Muslim rule in Spain.
The Holy Quran teaches tolerance to the mankind. Verse 2:225 says, ‘let there be no compulsion in religion’ Truth stands out clear from error.’
Hence, we find that by and large, the Muslim community has been tolerant towards non-believers, owing to the Islamic tenets of peace and tolerance. (contd)
