Islam’s important role in eradicating social evils -2
Assalam oalaikum,
When the river Nile did not rise till September the Egyptians became desperate and they decided to migrate to some other place. At this juncture, Amar bin-Al Aas felt worried and he reported the matter to Hazrat Umar (ra) and asked for his guidance.
Hazrat Umar (ra) was pleased with the governor’s decision of not allowing the Egyptian practice of drowning virgins in a river. He sent a card to the governor on which he wrote:
‘In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. From the slave of Allah, Umar- the Commander of the faithful to the Nile of Egypt..
‘Everything in the universe is subject to the will of Allah. The rise in your level is subject to the will of Allah and we pray to Allah (swt) to command you to rise in level’.
Hazrat Umar (ra) instructed Amr to toss the card in the middle of the river. Amr instructed the Christians to assemble near the river bank and he flung the card as he was told. The Muslims who were present there then prayed to Allah (swt) to make the river rise in level.
Allah (swt) heard the prayers of the Muslims and the very next morning the people of Egypt saw that the Nile has risen to its full flood height.
Thus, an age- old barbaric practice was brought to an end. This incident served as an eye- opener to the Egyptians and they understood that Islam was a blessing for the humanity. They rushed to the Muslim camp where all of them reverted to Islam!
